The generic med Benazepril (ben-a'ze-pril) is the bio equivalent for the brand drug for Lotensin. It is used for the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension (high blood pressure). It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines.

Benazepril HCL is an angiotensin converting enzyme (also known as ACE inhibitors). It works by decreasing a chemical that tightens blood vessels. This causes the blood vessels to relax, which lowers blood pressure. It's available in tablet form and dosage levels of 5mg, 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablets. It is also available in a combination form (Benazepril Hydrochloride and Hydrochlorothiazide). It is the generic for the brand drug Lotensin and Lotensin HCT.

Common Side Effects of with this Prescption Drug - Including: cough, dizziness, especially upon standing, headache, nausea, sleepiness, and tiredness.

Drug Interaction: There are certain drugs that cause negative side effects when taken with Generic Lotensin medication. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: (1) Dextran sulfate or thiazide diuretics because the risk of serious damage to the kidney may be increased; (2) Lithium because toxic side effects may be increased by this drug; (3) Do not use Indomethacin because the effectiveness of this medicine may be decreased; (4) Diabetic medicines (such as glyburide) because side effects, including low blood sugar levels, may be increased by this prescription; (5) Do not take potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (such as amiloride) while on this drug, beacuse it can cause high blood potassium levels, resulting in listlessness, confusion, abnormal skin sensations of the arms and legs, heaviness of limbs, slow or irregular heartbeat, or stopping of the heart; and (6) The use of Thiopurines (such as Azathioprine) may increase the risk of side effects (i.e. a low white blood cell count, increase in infections) may be increased by also taking Benazepril hci.
 

Important Notes: (1) This drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to the medicine. Using Benazepril alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks; (2) This drug may cause a dry, unproductive cough. This symptom usually stops after discontinuing taking this prescption; (3) Do not use a salt substitute or a potassium supplement without checking with your doctor; and (4) The usage of this drug after the third month of pregnancy, can cause injury or even death to the developing fetus. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately; and (5) If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using this medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
