Purpose:
This prescription drug is used as an
antidepressant medication. |

Uses:
Inhibits serotonin uptake from
synaptic gap and controls
norepinephrine reuptake to a
moderate degree. Additional uses
include: (1) Prophylaxis for
cluster, migraine and chronic
tension headaches; (2) peptic ulcer
disease; (3) to increase muscle
strength in myotonic dystrophy; (4)
treat pathologic weeping and
laughing; (5) eating disorders
associated with depression; (5) as a
sedative for nondepressed patients. |

Common Side Effects Include:
A small percent of people
experience: drowsiness, sedation,
nervousness, fatigue, headache,
insomnia, abnormal movements,
seizures, blurred vision, dry mouth,
increased appetite (especially for
sweets), weight gain, nausea,
vomiting & diarrhea. |

Additional Notes: (1)
Monitor weight this drug may
increase appetite or craving for
sweets. Relieve dry mouth by taking
frequent sips of water and increase
total fluid intake. Make position
changes slowly to avoid dizziness.
(2)
Do not engage in hazardous
activities until response to drug is
known. Amitriptyline may turn urine
blue green. (3) Do
not breast feed while taking this
drug without consulting with your
