Fact Sheet

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, generic drugs are the same as brand name drugs in:

  • Dosage
  • Safety
  • Strength
  • Quality
  • The way in which they work
  • The amount of time they take to work
  • The way in which they are taken
  • The way in which they should be used

The FDA requires ALL drugs, brand name and generic, to perform well and be safe.

Generic drugs must meet the same strict requirements and tests demanded by the FDA as brand name drugs.

Generic drugs use the same active ingredients as brand name drugs and offer the same, effective benefits as brand name drugs.

All pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities must meet the same FDA high standards. If a manufacturer fails to meet certain standards, the FDA will not allow them to distribute drugs through American channels.

The FDA has no authority over the drug supply of Canadian or foreign pharmacies. This is one reason US Customs can and does intercept and confiscate Canadian and foreign mail-order drugs.

For more information on generic drugs please contact your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare worker. You can also visit the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov/cder and click on Consumer Education.
