The diabetes drug Metformin (met-for'min) is the generic drug for Fortamet, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza and Riomet. It is used for the control and treatment of Type II diabetes.

Metformin is a biguanide anti-diabetic medicine. It works by decreasing the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb. It also helps to make your body more sensitive to the insulin that you naturally produce. It is the generic for the brand drugs Fortamet, Glucophage,  Glumetza and Riomet and is available in 500 mg, 850 mg, 1000 mg, 500mg (extended release tab) and 750mg (extended release tabs) tablet form.

Common Side Effects of Generic Fortamet - Include: diarrhea, gas, headache, indigestion, nausea, stomach upset, and vomiting.

Important Notes: (1) Generic Riomet may cause dizziness. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use this medicine with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it; (2) Do not drink large amounts of alcohol while you using this Type II medication. Talk to your doctor or health care provider before you drink alcohol while you use Metformin; (3) This prescription may commonly cause stomach upset, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea at the beginning of treatment. If you develop unusual or unexpected stomach problems, or if you develop stomach problems later during treatment, contact your doctor at once. This may be a sign of lactic acidosis; (4) Generic Glucophage should not be used in children younger than 10 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed; (5 For Women: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Metformin while you are pregnant; (6) Do not breast feed while taking this drug without consulting with your doctor.
