How Does This Oral Contraceptive Work? Ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate contains a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation. This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Ortho Lo Side Effects The common side effects include: mild nausea, breast tenderness/swelling, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, changes in weight or appetite, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstrual periods, headache, nervousness, dizziness, and tired feeling. Drug Interaction Concerns Please notify your physician if you are taking any of the following, because they will decrease the eefectiveness of this pill: acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ascorbic acid (vitamin C); prednisolone (Orapred); theophylline (Respbid, Theo-Dur); cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf); St. John's wort; any antibiotics; seizure medications; barbiturate sedative such as secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton); and/or HIV or AIDS medications.
