The generic drug Levothyroxine Sodium
(lee-voe-yhye-rox'een) is used in the treatment of low thyroid activity
and/or suppressing different types of goiters. It can also be used with
surgery and other medicines for managing certain types of thyroid cancer.
Levothyroxine is a thyroid hormone drug medication. Thyroid hormones are
produced and released by the thyroid gland and regulate the body's
metabolism. When the thyroid gland is underactive (hypothyroidism) it does
not produce enough thyroid hormone and metabolism slows. This drug is the
generic for the brand drugs Levothroid, Levoxyl and Synthroid.

Common Side Effects of Generic
Synthroid - Include:
anxiety, diarrhea, flushing, mood swings, muscle weakness, temporary
hair loss, sleeplessness, stomach cramps, tiredness, and vomiting.
Drug Interaction: There are certain drugs that cause negative side effects when taken with
Generic Levothroxine. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
(1) Aluminum salts, aminoquinolones (such as chloroquine),
amiodarone, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (like Zocor,
Simvastatin), iron
salts, Raloxifene, Rifampin, Sertraline (Generic Zoloft), or sucralfate
because they may decrease the effectiveness of this drug; (2) HMG-CoA
reductase inhibitors (i.e Simvastatin) or tricyclic antidepressants (such as
Amitriptyline) because side effects such as nervousness, fast heart rate, or
irregular heartbeat may occur; (3) Anti-coagulants (like
Warfarin) or
Ketamine because their actions and the risk of their side effects may be
increased by use of Levothyroxine; and (4) Beta-blockers (such as
Metoprolol) or digitalis glycosides because their effectiveness may be
decreased by this thyroid drug.
Important Notes: (1)
Geneirc Levothroid may rapidly swell and disintegrate resulting in choking,
gagging, the tablet getting stuck in your throat, or difficulty
swallowing. It is very important that you take the tablet with a full
glass of water. Most of these problems disappeared when Generic
Synthroid
tablets were taken with water. (2) For Diabetic users of
Levothyroxine, this drug may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar
levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your
diabetes medicine. (3) Do
not use this prescription if you are pregnant. It may cause harm to the fetus.
(4) Do not breast
feed while taking this drug without
consulting with your doctor.
